NSW: Greenpeace protests against increased fishing orders = 3

Federal Conservation Minister Wilson Tuckey later said that a new international research
program agreed to at the conference would provide an objective basis for setting future
catch levels.

Five Australian fisheries experts would be involved in tagging, monitoring and studying
the fish, he said.

It would not threaten the endangered species as Greenpeace protesters suggested earlier
in the day, Mr Tuckey added.

"Claims that this program could jeopardise the sustainability of the global blue tuna
fish stock are alarmist and unfounded," he said.

"We need to recognise that Australia is only one of many countries that have a legitimate
interest in the conservation and management of the (fish) stock and international cooperation
is essential in achieving these objectives."
